Prince Rogers Nelson (1958-2016), known mononymously as Prince, was an American singer, songwriter, musician, record producer, and actor. Recognized for his flamboyant androgynous persona, wide vocal range, and eclectic work that incorporated a wide variety of styles including funk, R&B, pop, rock, new wave, soul, synth-pop, psychedelia, and hip hop, he is widely regarded as one of the greatest musicians of his generation. He sold over 150 million records worldwide, making him one of the best-selling music artists of all time. His numerous accolades include seven Grammy Awards, six American Music Awards, a Golden Globe Award, and an Academy Award for Best Original Song Score for the film Purple Rain. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004, his first year of eligibility.
